Mamas to Mamas: Rafiki bracelets
Rafikis make a perfect Mother’s day gift this May. Watch this video to learn more about the impact and use these cute gift tags to celebrate the Mama’s in your life. MADE BY A MAMA Using traditional art forms, each piece is handcrafted by a mama in Kenya who is empowered through earning a fair wage for her work. There are five colours to choose from and every $10 Rafiki makes an impact on a different Adopt a Village pillar. In addition to those impacts, $5 of the purchase price for every Rafiki will support the country and pillar of your choice. |

We Are Tied Together
Our students planned, organized and implemented a child slave labor awareness day for our entire school. Age appropriate lessons were taught to prekindgarten-3, 4-6 and grades 7-12. Students were led by their peers and shown various videos which fostered engaging discussions. Students were then "forced" to tie knots and create wristbands which they were able to keep, however, most were sold later which provided funding for goats. Students that seemed to not work hard enough were actually "tied" to the tables until they produced. A great message was learnt by all participants! Also, our students that created this project are looking forward to running this session with other schools in the near future.

Goat Project
Our students created a fundraiser to purchase goats for Father Anthony - his entire region unfortunately has been wiped out by recent flooding. This has driven the price of goats way up - from the usually $40 or $50 dollars to $90. Our social justice students managed to fund raise enough money to buy 7 goats - and combining with our entire school we managed to fund raise enough to buy 16 goats. ($1440) Through our fundraising efforts including the Goat Project Raffle, we were able to provide 16 goats (at $90/ goat!) for families in Chennai, India, who had been devastated by flooding. Father Anthony was able to personally ensure that these goats were received by families on his recent trip to his home town. We appreciate the support that people in our community extend to others during their time of need! Thank you for helping US help others! |

Her Brothers
Our students attended a meet and greet with the band Her Brothers. http://www.herbrothers.com
Their message: "With a dream to lead and inspire men to stand up for, encourage, and become positive male influences in the lives of women in our world who either don't have a voice or simply can't speak up for themselves.
We would like to thank MPY4C and Her Brothers for a personal meet and greet at St. Mary`s. A really neat opportunity - instead of our kids asking Her Brothers questions, they asked our students about our projects and it was amazing to sit back and listen to them speak! Made my day!!!
We then attended Her Brothers concert! An amazing message! Our students then asked some very important questions!

2000 batteries have already been collected – each AA battery saves 6 lives in Africa! In addition, St. Mary’s students are collecting K-cups, Tassimo Pods that cannot be recycled and shipping them to a company that uses the unrecyclable plastic in their roads (Vancouver). The St. Mary’s Social Justice Club and Mr. Allison’s Science 9 class are teaming up again this year to work on an important environmental issue. Our goal is to raise awareness in our community about these three environmental problems. Our first goal is to raise awareness about these global issues. Our main focus is to make our earth greener and our future brighter. We want to prove that we can make a difference and keep as much plastic out of the ground and our oceans as possible! |
