How does problem solving engage all types of learners?
I thought that I did a good job of having problems that engaged my students before going on my maternity leave, but now I realize that to really engage my students my problems need to be more authentic or real life problems. The math environment needs to be open and comfortable for all learning styles. I found that the grade 7 students love to use vertical surfaces to show their ideas and work. The grade 8 students prefer to work on real life problems that can affect their lives.
Next year I would really like to focus more on authentic and project based activities for all my classes. I have been thinking more on how to combine my science and math together so that the students have more time to solve problems using projects related to both subjects.
This has been a great experience for me to learn more about my students, how problem solving lets them be more creative, better problem solvers and more engaged learners. I have also learn how to reflect more on my teaching and my day. I find myself looking more for the positive aspect in each of my classes and students. I have really enjoyed being back in the classroom.
Thank you to all the wonderful people in the math group and our courageous leader Alicia Burdess. Thank you Jacquie Anderson for joining me in my classroom and making a video to show the students their hard work. We have done an amazing job sharing ideas, listening to each other and supporting each other. Thank you all for helping me to become a better teacher.
